The FAQ You Ask US on Working With an Interior Designer

We know that some of our clients have not worked with an Interior Designer before, and it’s a new experience! Here we share many of the typical questions we are often asked relating to interior design, how we work and our design process to serve you so we achieve your dream home goals.

  • If your project includes just the furnishings, light fixtures, and some accessories, then “decoration” is the appropriate service for your needs. Many trained designers also offer interior decorating services. If your scope of work includes new construction specifications, or you are working on a renovation of your existing home, meaning an overall plan that takes into account a concept, a budget, and construction, you are looking for an Interior Designer who has received training. A designer is concerned with the space's functionality, aesthetics, as well as wellness. A designer creates the concept but also assures it materializes. A designer oversees vendors, logistics, purchasing, implementation, styling, and finishing touches through to completion, in addition to creating the vision and design concept.

The decisions you make, whether with a decorator or designer lead to a comprehensive design concept and specifications, and it’s all in pursuit of one result: your stunning home.

  • We use the Flat Fee investment model for our project service pricing, so there are no surprises. The cost of our services varies based on the kind of project and the scope, square foot size, complexity, and extent of the work. For the design phase of the project, all of our fees are fixed rates. In addition, we provide a variety of flat fee options within our service menu. Project oversight is a percentage. Product procurement is included. White Glove delivery is at cost. You can count on us to be entirely open and honest about our fee schedule and pricing structure. Your project's most crucial component is our sincere collaboration with you.

  • We suggest hiring an Interior Designer before or around the time of hiring an architect, builder or general contractor. Knowledgeable designers are able to enhance the project and ensure that you receive the end result that is in your dreams. We’re here to guide you so you achieve success and be your advocate through the process.

  • Our team is your unbiased expert resource - your advocate who is the liaison between all your various services: architect, contractor, and trades people. We are the chief coordinator, your dedicated Project Manager, translating and communicating the information on the who, what, where, why and how of your home to the appropriate parties. We know how to choose which trades or artisans to work with your project to increase cohesiveness and success. It’s honest advocacy and professional expertise advice you can count on.

A designer’s value lies in their expertise knowledge base. Professional designers with extensive experience help clients avoid costly mistakes. Access to our global resources including custom fabricators is invaluable as we offer options that you have not considered, nor know how to locate. We offer experienced space and furnishings planning, art curation and proper display to create a unique home that tells your unique, one-of-a-kind story. We attend to every detail, everything from design conception to completion of the beautiful results.

  • We recommend you allow our design process to take 3-5 months, however, custom upholstery and rugs can take 6 months. In a hurry? Good news, our in stock items can be delivered expedited, through some Quick Ship programs, for those in need of new goods fast. Construction and the permit process can take longer.

    1. Architect

    2. Builder

    3. Interior Designer

Having seasoned professionals on your side is the best decision you can make for your largest asset, while investing in your home. Designers work with the Architect to be sure no details are missed for how you live. With Builders, we advocate for you on the myriad of decisions to be made. We make the process fun and remove the stress from you.

  • Let’s look at what happens when you don’t bring in a Designer first - it’s like making a movie without a director: there’s no one holding the full vision and no one sharing information with the team in a way they are used to processing the information. With a Designer on board, you will have someone taking charge of coordinating all the decisions, someone who knows exactly how all of the pieces in your very large project puzzle impacts the next, and someone who can, and will, take all those pieces and create a home that is breathtaking in every way, and creates your story of home.

Hiring a Designer ensures personalization that you otherwise may not know how to achieve. We offer custom solutions, from cabinetry to tile, to furnishings or rugs, all custom made for you, to be as unique and special as you.

  • Calling it “Reality TV” is really a bit of a misnomer to me, because it’s not “reality.” You’re seeing results, not a process, and process is a big part of any design practice. Reality shows are based on months and months of pre-planning, which is probably the only place where the processes do overlap, but they can’t show that prep work in thirty minutes. Someone is doing the design for some months, paying the salaries, fees and for the materials used in the projects. Often the service and products are all comped, or there are no construction fees added. So, what you see is the big, flashy and fabulous reveal. But it’s not real time, real price and it’s not real life. For your home to have the big wonderful reveal certainly is possible, it certainly is our goal, but based in real time, which is often at least three to six months out, or more, especially in renovation.

  • Project Management is defined as the application of processes, knowledge, tools and experience to achieve specific project objectives according to the project scope of work. The five phases of project management are: Initiation, Internal Planning, Implementation, Control/Reviews and Closing. Project Management has final deliverables that are bound to a timeline and investment. This provides structure and control of the project so that the agreed work activities will produce the right final product to meet our expectations.

Projects must be properly managed and controlled in order to meet the scope. As your Project Manager, we PM, or coordinate and lead the work of a team to achieve all project success on your behalf. After the design is approved, and the construction work is started we bill for our time on site, coordinating and ensuring your design is implemented according to plan. We handle all the oversight so you don’t have to deal with the pressures and issues of the business and you can stay focused on your own business.

Domaine Luxe assesses a Project Management fee as part of our fee structure at 25% payable to the company for any service by trade vendors. The fee is based on trade vendor quote or billing invoice, for all goods and services of job total costs. The client directly pays the trade vendor. Our company PM fee is due immediately.

  • While it's fun and exciting to go over your new designs with friends, it's important not to crowdsource design opinions. We design for you, our client, the decision maker, specifically and getting opinions from others will dilute the design and take away the customization for you. We are responsible for making you happy and that is just what we will do!

  • Services requested and completed that were not included in the initial scope of work description in our letter of agreement are considered out-of-scope work and are billed at our hourly rate.

  • The Retainer guarantees company time is allocated to reserve future and ongoing implementation services. It is money paid upfront to ensure funds are immediately available for a fast turnaround, and in second phase furnishings and finishes procurement it is used with purchase orders fulfillment and that a project is completed. We ask for a retainer at 80% of the goods estimated to furnish your project and for Project Management in order to begin procurement. We manage the money, are paid upfront for services, and you see all details in our client portal. All product ordered, and shipping must be paid in advance. White Glove delivery is estimated at time of scheduling the install and then reconciled.

  • Thoughtful design - especially in kitchens and baths _ adds both emotional and tangible value. Well-proportioned well-executed interiors enhance daily living and are consistently recognized in resale.

  • Not at all. True luxury lies in proportion, planning, and craftsmanship. A beautiful space must also function effortlessly and endure over time.

  • We dig deep before we start designing because we want to get to know you on a deep and intimate level. To get there, we set up our initial consultation as a working meeting with the intention of establishing direction and through our questionnaire and inspirational elements. In those continuing Deep Dive meetings we ask lots of questions and listen hard to your answers – because your answers tell us who you are, and what you care about. Your answers tell us what you love, what’s sentimental to you, and what you want to express about yourself, your family, and your project. After we get to know you in our deep dive, in our discovery phase, and through detailed consideration, we integrate images with our design boards that communicate our ideas into a new vision for your home.

  • Our work is strongly influenced by European, particularly Parisian, design principles: balance, symmetry, subtle luxury, and an appreciation for materials that age gracefully. We believe elegance should feel effortless, never overstated.

  • Imagine baking a cake and having someone else trying to add ingredients at the last minute or frosting it in a style that isn’t in keeping with the original design intent. The cake won’t be as the baker, or in this case, the Interior Designer intended. If you think it is exactly the same, it probably isn’t. Many top goods are copied and value engineered to be cheaper.

You invest in your space by having us thoughtfully curate the space. By detracting or adding items that are not a part of the original design, we are moving away from the finished aesthetic or quality that you are so excited about. It’s tempting to do your own shopping to save money, but in the end, we find that it costs our clients in scale, proportion, and quality, especially in cheaper made imitations. These mistakes means that clients end up buying items twice and experience stress and frustration from the extra costs and time wasted. By opting for our Full-Service Design, you get a top level of service. We procure all the product so we manage and control the accuracy, ensuring the vision of the deliverables and final project. This procurement takes a lot of time over many months, and we handle all the coordination and potential issues so you don’t have the added pressure.

If you want to do your own purchasing, that is fine as long as we know that prior to beginning the project. We will do this on an hourly fee in a virtual appointment, or Designer on Demand (paid in 10 hourly blocks up front, a minimum of $3000). We ask that you show us your selections before purchasing, and if we don’t believe the item fits, we’ll let you know. You are responsible for all purchasing, and 100% of project management of procurement, ordering, tracking, warehousing, freight damages, claims, returns, delivery, through installation, and time spent coordinating all of the services. We cannot verify the pieces for quality and will not be responsible for assisting in the case that the items are damaged, don't last, or need returning. If you shop an item we specified for you, that adds to our time. If you’ve paid a Flat Fee for our Full Service, this will be billed hourly for the sourcing time of the item.

  • That’s generally not part of the equation when we work with Full-Service Concierge clients. Our experience has shown us that the key to successfully working with an Interior Designer is to have one person do the heavy lifting.

This lets the client’s original vision be executed seamlessly, effectively and in a way that is truly design service oriented for the client. The only exception is we offer our opportunity for Finishes Sourcing and Selection, ten hours, to start, at a new build development where we select, or in some smaller renovation instances.

  • While we do our best to incorporate your existing decor, if they are not compatible with the space size, layout and design and your desired aesthetic of your space, we will be honest to inform you and cannot guarantee their inclusion.

  • We are driven to design for your dreams and lifestyle.

Our luxury design service includes careful planning, effective communication and attention to detail to ensure a highest standards of quality.

With our design systems, professional designer programs, tools and management of internal processes (like our 10 Step Project Process) and procedures in place, our team guarantees to manage and develop your project on time, within your investment to a successful fruition.

Follow your dreams! Let us convey your dreams into reality.

  • Your investment is where the realistic picture of how your project begins, and we won’t start a project without one; the numbers typically are broken down per room, for finishes, furnishings, accessories and later for construction and design fees. This is the map that shows us how we can do the best job for you. We will walk you through the process based on our extensive experience with interior design. We find that our clients may know how much they want to invest, but may not know what is a reasonable amount for furnishings or finishes and fees are for a project like yours. We guide you through this process and set an investment guideline as a minimum expenditure. This is a minimum and not in any way a budget. Because this amount is a standard amount and does not apply to your specific project, it is highly unlikely that Domaine Luxe can execute the design for less than this amount. This fee covers products for furniture and accessories only.

Our flat fee + hybrid PM fee includes the design plan, procurement management of product, implementation, coordination, and installation. Project management and construction management is based on vendor costs. Delivery and White Glove installation is set by our receiver. An average room design fee starts at $4500 and is based on square footage, the scope of work, detail, hours/months needed, along with the complexity of the job. Kitchens and bath design, and custom cabinetry with all the detail, planning, and procurement are higher.

We share estimates of what rooms cost based on our experience. Different websites provide resources about interior design or renovation costs so that you can be more aware of typical amount guidelines. What you choose to invest is your choice. Perhaps your comfort level is less than what these guides suggest. Remember, the short term investment range is for your long term happiness and ROI! Our goal is to work within your investment range, but please keep changes, contingency plans and unforeseen circumstances in mind.

  • We’re happy to help you with a Master Plan for your project. Depending on the room size and other details, we will need to know this upfront, to provide a proposal for you, and give you a beginning range once we start with a programming consultation.

  • Very much so. Being an expert in period style, our designs often engage with Mediterranean Revival, Bermuda, and classic coastal architecture. We believe interiors should feel in quiet dialogue with the home’s exterior - never competing, always complementary.

  • Our work is defined by restraint, balance, and an editorial eye informed by European design. We favor timeless compositions over fleeting trends, creating interiors that feel cultivated, personal, and enduring.

  • We begin with an initial programming consultation. Whether a redesign, new construction, or full home interiors we explore, collaborate and assess your situation to get an overview. We identify, clarify and review your design considerations, aesthetic direction, and potential collaboration. We discuss your project budget investment and timeline, our creative process, business practices, and we answer your questions. You will get value out of this first meeting, whether or not you take advantage of our skills to further transform your space, as you will gain clarity and direction. After this meeting, we prepare a proposal based on our findings and your investment, and return to walk you through every step of the process. Our goal is for your success at a happy, healthy, and well planned, unique home. Domaine Luxe coordinates the issues and solves all the problems so you don’t have to deal with the time, aggravation, or stress.
